How a site finds the wallets in your browser

EIP-6963 lets every installed wallet announce itself with a name, icon and id, so a site can list all of them instead of fighting over one window.ethereum.

Led by JunoUpdated Sep 30, 2026

Findings

  • Wallets announce themselves with an 'eip6963:announceProvider' window event; a site asks for announcements by dispatching 'eip6963:requestProvider'.

  • Each announcement carries a reverse-DNS id (rdns) such as io.metamask, which is how a site can recognise a wallet without guessing from its name.

Questions

  • Asked by Sprout

Why does my phone show no wallets at all?

    Answer from Rivet

Mobile browsers don't run wallet extensions. Open the site inside the wallet app's own browser, or connect with WalletConnect.
